If you have been a fan of social satires, you are definitely going to love it. Yes! It’s Mollywood again – all geared up for the release of a social satire this week - a Malayalam comedy essentially. The film titled Aabhaasam, an abbreviation of Aarsha Bhaaratha Samsakaaram, which refers to the splendid Indian Vedic culture, brings double the thrill for ardent Mollywood fans as it comes out as a debut direction of seasoned writer Jubith Namradath. It mirrors the ways of the world well-knit into an overnight bus journey from Bangalore to Thiruvananthpuram. Braving ample criticism from the Censor Board, the film is finally set to hit the theatres on April 27th . As fans look forward to it, Namradath keeps his fingers crossed.
Shot with a highly captivating plot, Aabhaasam takes an offbeat approach to presenting the social issues plaguing India. Director Jubith Namradath has objectified the social realties in a much promising and interesting manner. The film entails a story around a fleet of five buses named after historic Indian political leaders – Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Nathuram Godse, BR Ambedkar and Karl Marx, and being managed by a travel agency named Democracy. The story circles more around the journey of the bus named Gandhi, between Bangalore and Thiruvananthpuram, in Kerala. The prominent starcast in the film including Rima Kallingal, Sheetal Shyam and Suraj Venjaramoodu, are all on board the bus named Gandhi and travel overnight. The film effectively brings out the opinions of the travellers who go on analyse to the evolution of the societal norms. Within that, they end up manifesting the huge influences of their patriarchal atmosphere on their perceptions. A political or social satire as he calls it, Namradath has shrewdly portrayed the bus a metaphor for the social system in India, while competently showing the starcast as the victims. Aabhaasam is largely a sequel to Namradath’s previous film Democracy, released back in the year 2010. People from different social stature get together on this bus and their opinions and perspectives knock against each other too. After successfully building several short films like Naalu and Mazhapaatakal, Namradath finally managed to get the film through. The film raises several social issues ranging from beef uproar to the gamut of moral policing in India. So much so, that one the passengers in the bus, an old man, goes on the blame it on the beef politics for the killing of his fellow cook. Meanwhile, the film also highlights the impact of Shiv Sena on the average minds of the countrymen, especially, the youth.
After several extensions, the film is scheduled for a final release on April 27th . Stay tuned!
